SGR's weekly newsletter is sent each Sunday afternoon around 5 p.m. It requires only about 5 minutes of your time to stay updated on what is currently going on in our club ... or what is coming up soon, including notices about board meetings, committee meetings (when scheduled these will always be the very first announcement) or today's speaker / program. Paul Richard Alexander, who passed away on March 11, 2024, was a legend, considered so because other than Steven Hawking and Christopher Reeves, he is the most well-known and most-viewed quadriplegic of his time.

He contracted polio when he was five years old and spent the next t 72 years sleeping in, working in, and basically breathing in the iron lung. The name "Three Minutes for a Dog" was given to the book because a persistent caregiver, who was trying to teach him to gulp air with his throat, told him he could get the bulldog he wanted if he just lasted three minutes outside the machine.

Eventually, he was able to breath on his own long enough to finish grade school at home and get an economics degree from SMU. Then with the help of many friends and caregivers he completed his studies to earn a law degree, then practiced law for the next 30 years until his body finally started rebelling and he had to spend more time in the old machine.

He touched many lives all over the world with his book and social media. He was an ambassador for Rotary International reminding millions poiio is not yet completely eradicated, and was the topic of many videos and publications.

Another order of sweet, delicious California oranges will be delivered on April 1, 2024 - no fooling - for those who enjoyed this delicious fruit so much they wanted to order more ... or for those who didn't get around to ordering the first time. This order will also include 20 cases sold to new buyers by Scout Troop 407.

SGR's GUATEMALA STOVES PROJECT BY THE NUMBERS!

125 - the number of stoves SGR hopes to build in '24

200 - approximate cost per stove

25,000 - amount needed for this year's project

8600 - amount SGR already has for stoves project

4500 - approximate amount raised selling oranges

5000 - hopefully another donation from Cedar City RC

200 - recent donation from Rotarian BJ Cox for 1 stove

6800 and 34 - approximate amount and number of donors still needed

Your $200 (or more) donation to "purchase" a stove for a Mayan family in Guatemala will lessen the incidence of burns, respiratory disease and eye problems; create a smoke-free environment and reduce the need for the daily collection of firewood by women and children.
