Never heard of futsal? This challenging and fun new sport may not yet be a household name in St. George, but it is definitely growing in popularity as more and more teenagers take it up. Its name is loosely translated from Portuguese as "hall football" or "indoor football" and played between two teams each with five players, one who is the goalkeeper. Unlike other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court and with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular football. These variations of surface, ball and rules lead to improvisation, creativity and technique.
The Rotary Club of St. George has big plans to partner with St. George City Leisure Services as well as with the Dixie Sunrise Rotary Club and the Red Rock Rotary Club in St. George to install two courts, spectator seating, improve landscaping, and mount a plaque on the site noting noting Rotary Club participation in the project. Watch for an announcement in September 2012.
