HomeIntro to Rotary

Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons, united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Size of Rotary
There are Rotary chartered clubs in more than 200 countries worldwide, cutting across dozens of languages, political and social structures, customs, religions and traditions. On July 1, 2013 there were 34,216 chartered clubs  with more than 1.2 million members. Rotaract for adults 18-30 has 204,102 members in 8,874 clubs, and Interact for teenage youth has 315,836 members in 13,732 clubs.

Rotary Motto
In 1989, Rotary International established “Service Above Self” as the principal motto of Rotary, since it best explains the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service.

Birth of Rotary & Paul Harris
Rotary was founded on February 23, 1905, by Paul Harris, a young lawyer, in Chicago, Illinois. On that day he met with three other businessmen – a coal dealer, a mining engineer, and a tailor in the tailor’s office at 127 North Dearborn Street.
