"What you didn't know you didn't know about Valley Fever ... and why you should know!"

Katharine S. Walter, PhD, studies the impacts of environmental change on infectious disease, with a particular focus on Valley Fever and tuberculosis. Alongside her research, she writes about ecology and health for The NationNautilus, and elsewhere. She is an assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Utah where she leads the Evo-Epi Laboratory.

Valley fever is an emerging fungal disease and frequent cause of pneumonia found in hot and dry parts of the American West. The Evo-Epi Laboratory at the University Utah is conducting field work across Washington County to better understand where the fungus is in the environment and how it is maintained—with the goal of preventing future infections.
